“Brycen’s Journey: A Story of Resilience, Hope, and Joy in the Face of Sickle Cell Disease”. 4

Before Brycen ever took his first steps or spoke his first words, his life had already been marked by a battle most children will never have to face. He was born with sickle cell disease—a condition that would demand strength, resilience, and unyielding hope from both him and his family.

While many babies begin their lives discovering the world through play, Brycen’s earliest experiences were in hospital rooms. His family quickly became familiar with the rhythm of medical care: countless hospital visits, critical blood transfusions, and the daily routines necessary to protect his health. Yet even in those difficult times, Brycen was never truly alone.
At Atrium Health Levine Children’s Brenner Children’s Hospital, a team of caring doctors and nurses became an extended family, guiding him through the challenges of his illness. With their support, Brycen learned lessons that many don’t grasp until adulthood: the importance of regular check-ups, the simple but powerful act of staying hydrated, and above all, the courage to never give up no matter how hard the days might be.

Now, at 11 years old, Brycen stands as living proof of resilience. His spirit shines in the classroom, where he is an honor roll student, and in his creativity, which flourishes through the Mathematics Science Education Network (MSEN) program at Winston-Salem State University. There, he explores his love for storytelling and film projects, finding new ways to express his imagination and voice.

But Brycen’s story is not only about perseverance—it is also about joy. Outside of school, he is just like any other child who loves to laugh, play, and dream big. He spends his time gaming, dribbling down basketball courts, scoring goals in soccer, and—perhaps most of all—stepping up to the plate in baseball, a sport that has captured his heart since he was just five years old. Each time he rounds the bases, his smile radiates the happiness of a boy who refuses to be defined by illness.
As Brycen looks toward the future, his determination burns brighter than ever. He knows that life may continue to bring challenges, but he also knows he has a community that stands firmly behind him—his devoted family, loyal friends, and the tireless healthcare team that has walked every step of this journey with him. For Brycen, gratitude is not just a word; it is a way of life.
Today, he focuses on what he loves most, cherishing the people who have supported him and embracing every opportunity to learn, grow, and dream. Whether on the field or off, Brycen is ready to face whatever comes his way with courage and hope.
His story is not only one of a child overcoming obstacles but also a reminder to us all: that even in the face of adversity, with love, faith, and determination, the human spirit can thrive. Brycen is not just surviving—he is truly living, and his future is as limitless as the sky above the baseball field he loves so much.
